About Me
Dr. Polly Panitz, FAAP, is a board certified, fellowship-trained Behavioral and Developmental Pediatrician who has practiced at Capital Area Pediatrics since 2008. Her training consists of two fellowships, one with the National Committee on Clinical Infancy Programs and another from Children's Memorial Hospital of the Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago; a residency at Children's Memorial Hospital; and medical school at the Boston University School of Medicine.
Her background includes ten years of general pediatric practice with special interests in the behavioral challenges of young children. Her work focuses on supporting families and promoting healthy parenting styles to allow for optimal outcomes for children both at risk and typically developing. She has specialized in developmental challenges of early childhood and the management of Autism Spectrum Disorders in young children. Dr Panitz approaches the child with a strengths based perspective while identifying areas of weakness on which to focus with evidence based practices.
Dr. Panitz’s practice is now limited to the assessment of the preschooler with developmental delays and concerns for Autism Spectrum Disorder. Due to the pandemic and the inability to perform these assessments in protective equipment, all of her visits are via telehealth. Assessments take place over two appointments: a one hour history intake visit with both parents followed by a 90 minute structured play assessment the following week. It is important that parents supply all documentation of any outside assessments, complete intake packet paperwork prior to the first visit and they are invited to share videos to augment the assessment. For the second visit, it is imperative that they are fully prepared and have read the instructions supplied so that the time is used optimally. Dr Panitz’s practice at this point is limited to this assessment and one to three follow-up appointments and not long term management. She will then guide the family as they create a long term treatment plan and turn their care over to another clinician as seems appropriate.
In addition to these clinical services, Dr Panitz runs biannual parenting workshops to focus on the understanding and management of challenging behaviors as well as parent support groups. Please check the website for up-to-date schedules.
