About the Knee

The knee is a complex, weight-bearing hinge joint connecting the femur and tibia, supported by ligaments and tendons. It enables flexion/extension and some rotation, making it essential for walking, running, and jumping.

Knee Osteoarthritis

  • Pain worse with activity, better with rest
  • Crepitus, stiffness (often AM), swelling/warmth
  • Mobility reduction over time

Care starts conservatively (weight management, PT/exercise, NSAIDs, injections, bracing). Surgery is considered when non-operative options fail to control symptoms.

Knee Effusion

Excess joint fluid from arthritis, gout, or injury causes swelling, stiffness, warmth, and pain. Most cases respond to meds, aspiration, or injections; surgery is rarely needed.

ACL Strain or Tear

Sudden pivot/twist can injure the ACL, often with a pop, pain, swelling, and instability. Milder injuries may be braced/rehabbed; complete tears often need reconstruction for active patients.

Meniscus Tear

Menisci cushion and stabilize the knee. Tears can be degenerative or from a twist. Severity drives care from rest/PT to arthroscopic repair/trim; full replacement is rarely related to isolated meniscal tears.

Knee Bursitis

Inflamed bursa causes focal swelling and tenderness, common with kneeling trades and some sports. Managed with activity mods, PT, meds, injections; surgery is uncommon.

Patellar Tendonitis

Overuse or acute strain of the patellar tendon leads to anterior knee pain and stiffness. Rest, load-management, eccentric strengthening, and modalities are first-line; surgery is rare.

Prevention

Dynamic stretching before exercise (e.g., leg swings, bodyweight squats) and static stretching after can help mobility and recovery. Train progressively; warm up, cross-train, and track loads.
